Recycled plastics as a raw material and how biotechnology can be part of valorizing it
Every year, the EU generates more than 20 million tons of plastic waste, but less than 30 % is recycled. The reason is that classical recycling processes have serious challenges and limitations. One way to reduce plastic waste is to increase the recyclability of post-consumer plastics with renewable and easy-recyclable eco-polymers to create a sustainable plastic system. We look into the current challenges, ongoing research and examples of biotechnological plastic recycling.
