On October 28 Thomas Neergaard drove from his home in Odense to Helix Lab for the last time. Three years after he joined as Scientific Director, he has resigned his position to travel the world with his wife.
Neergaard joined Helix Lab as one of its earliest team members, playing a pivotal role in establishing its academia-industry collaboration. His commitment and contribution were instrumental in developing Helix Lab’s core initiatives, including the creation of laboratories, hosting of Tech Talks, and facilitating collaboration between Kalundborg industry and the universities.
The decision to hand over the keys is the result of a careful consideration and a well-thought-out idea. But most importantly because there is much more to life than work, he says:
- We do not live forever and I’m at a place in my life where I’m healthy and able, and I’ve always known that exploring the world is something I want to do. The time is right for us now, not in ten years when we might not be able.
The first leg of his journey will take him and his wife to Hobart, Tasmania, followed by an Australian road trip in a camper van. Their return is planned for February 2025, but as Neergaard mentions, this is just the beginning, with an extended summer trip with friends, and a journey to Iceland already on the horizon.
Thomas Neergaard’s career began in Kalundborg at Novo Nordisk, where he served as Production Director for several years before transitioning to Helix Lab. His extensive experience in the industry, coupled with a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology, made him an ideal choice for the role of Scientific Director.
- It turned out to be a very rewarding fit for me personally as well. I’ve enjoyed contributing to an environment that has evolved greatly, from a temporary office without equipment to advanced bio labs where students graduate with excellent results. It’s been very fulfilling.
Anette Birck, Director of Helix Lab, expressed her appreciation for Neergaard’s dedication and lasting impact on the Helix Lab initiative.
- Although I’m saddened to see Thomas go, I would like to congratulate him on his decision to do what feels right at this specific time in his life. It is very inspiring and admirable. I would of course also like to thank him immensely for his enthusiasm and hard work, that has contributed to building Helix Lab from the ground up and made it what it is today, she says.
The search for Thomas Neergaard’s successor is currently underway.
