SaltPower – The CO2-Free Osmotic Power of the Future

The technology behind generating energy from salt is known as Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO). This process requires two key elements: a continuous flow of saltwater, ideally saturated brine, and a stream of freshwater.
These two fluids are separated by a semipermeable membrane that allows water molecules to pass through but blocks salt. The process takes advantage of osmosis, where solvent molecules, such as water, naturally move from areas of lower concentration to higher concentration across the membrane.
This water movement can be harnessed to produce energy, and the higher the concentration of salt in the water, the greater the potential for energy generation. This method is commonly referred to as salinity gradient power.
