Project title
Organic Matter Utilization for Electro-Methanogenesis Application (OMEGA)
Project Description
The integration of Microbial Electrolysis Cells (MECs) and Anaerobic Digestion (AD) systems enhances methane yield from wastewater. MECs use electroactive bacteria to breakdown organic compounds, producing hydrogen, while AD relies on microbial decomposition to produce methane. Integrating MEC and AD leads to electro-methanogenesis (EMG) systems, enhancing methane production and overall treatment efficiency. EMGs offer a solution for green hydrogen supply and have moderate CAPEX and low OPEX, making them cost-effective. The project entails conducting a feasibility study in a laboratory setting using industrial wastewater from Novonesis. It also presents an opportunity to extract value from organic waste streams which otherwise remain untapped.
